LPG Shortage in Hyderabad: LPG Hostels Threaten to go on Strike due to Cooking Crisis as Supply drops.

The problem of a deficit of commercial Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) is becoming a menace in the city of Hyderabad as it starts to affect paying guest (LPG) accommodation and other private hostels in the city. Many of the owners of facilities claim that the supply of LPG has reduced drastically posing a problem at kitchens that cook daily meals to hundreds of their residents.

75% Drop in LPG Supply Reported

Managers of large LPG accommodations indicate that the decrease in the supply of LPG cylinders has been sharp and abrupt. According to some operators their supply is reduced by 75 percent.

Lakshmi, the manager of Amulya Grand Luxury Womens LPG, Gachibowli, said that the shortage may turn out to be a serious issue in case it persists.
There is a drastic decrease in the supply. We formerly used to get about 100 cylinders round, but we are getting only about 20 or so now, said she.
Given that food to various buildings is prepared in a central kitchen, a continuous supply of LPG is necessary to supply food to the residents on a daily basis.

Areas of IT Hubs to Get heavily affected.

The scarcity is being felt particularly in the major IT hubs areas of Hyderabad like:

  • Gachibowli
  • Kukatpally
  • Madhapur

These are the regions where there are thousands of IT professionals and students and they rely on the accommodation provided by Pgs to provide them with accommodation and meals.

Kalyani, another owner of a LPG in Gachibowli, claimed that due to a decrease, it is hard to organize the kitchen activities.

Until a few days ago, we had no difficulty in supplies; however, we are getting less of the cylinders, and it is difficult to plan a meal.

West Asia War that has an impact on the LPG supply.

The scarcity is on top of the fact that the Union Petroleum Ministry has cautioned that there might be supply shortage in a number of parts of India.

This has created logistical problems and global supply strains because of the current conflict in West Asia to other regions of the country, according to those in charge.

This has brought confusion to the businesses that are so dependent on commercial LPG cylinders.

  • Smaller Hostels Not So Yet Hardly hit. Although bigger LPGs are struggling, smaller hostels indicate that the effect is not too intense.
One of the representatives of Star Living Men’s Hostel in Habsiguda stated that their demand is not very high. We do not usually require more than one cylinder per week, and therefore, the scarcity has not struck us at once. Nevertheless, the prices have become higher, and bigger hostels are already struggling. Neighborhoods that Still Have not been disrupted. The supply problems notwithstanding, the majority of the residents report that they did not feel inconvenienced by meal delivery so far. Most of the LPG hostels and private accommodation still continue to serve food as usual. Nonetheless, according to the operators, the shortage may also affect meal preparation on a daily basis as long as the shortage lasts longer.
    Plausible Substitutes to LPG.

In order to cope with the shortage, there are already other methods of cooking that are considered by some of the owners of the PHG:

    Induction cooktops
  • Electric cooking systems
  • Hybrid kitchen setups

These alternatives would help decrease reliance on LPG in case of problems in supply.

Conclusion

The issue of LPG shortage in commercial areas in Hyderabad has also become an issue of concern to the owners of the PGs and hostels who depend on the constant flow of LPG to prepare meals to the residents. Although the scenario has not been such that it has caused a wide scale breakdown of services, a long term shortage may pose significant problems on the hostels accommodating large populations of students and professionals.

Governments and suppliers will be forced to normalize the distribution of LPG as soon as possible to prevent the extension of the effect to the accommodation industry of the city.
