BJP West Bengal Candidate List 2026: 144 Candidates Announced, Suvendu Adhikari vs Mamata Banerjee Battle Heats Up

The political temperature in West Bengal has started rising as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) released its first list of 144 candidates for the West Bengal Assembly Election 2026 on Monday, March 16. With this announcement, the party has made it clear that it is entering the election battlefield with an aggressive strategy and a strong lineup of candidates. The list covers nearly half of the 294 assembly seats in the state, giving BJP candidates an early start for campaigning and signaling that the party is aiming for a major political breakthrough in the state.

The biggest highlight from the list is the bold move involving Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari. BJP has decided to field him from two key constituencies – Nandigram and Bhabanipur. Nandigram is already considered Adhikari’s stronghold where he defeated Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in the dramatic 2021 assembly election. However, the decision to field him from Bhabanipur as well has created the biggest political talking point of the election season, because Bhabanipur is widely known as Mamata Banerjee’s home turf. If this direct contest happens, it could easily become the most high-profile political battle of the 2026 elections.

Apart from this headline clash, the BJP’s candidate list includes a mix of experienced politicians, sitting MLAs, and well-known public faces who are expected to lead the party’s campaign across the state. Former West Bengal BJP president Dilip Ghosh has been fielded from Kharagpur Sadar, a seat where he has historically maintained a strong base. In the industrial region of Asansol, fashion designer-turned-politician Agnimitra Paul has once again been nominated from Asansol Dakshin, where she remains one of the party’s most recognizable leaders. Meanwhile, political commentator and former Rajya Sabha MP Swapan Dasgupta will contest from the prominent Rashbehari seat in South Kolkata.

The list also features several familiar names from different fields. Former Indian cricketer Ashok Dinda will contest from Moyna, continuing his political journey with the BJP. Actor-turned-politician Rudranil Ghosh has once again been chosen as the candidate from Shibpur, a key constituency in the Howrah district. By bringing together political veterans, celebrities, and regional leaders, BJP appears to be trying to strengthen its appeal across different sections of voters.

Regionally, the first candidate list focuses heavily on North Bengal and the Malda–Murshidabad belt, areas where the BJP has been trying to expand its support base. Some of the notable names from these regions include Shankar Ghosh from Siliguri, Paritosh Das from Alipurduars, Kaushik Chowdhury from Raiganj, Gopal Chandra Saha from Maldaha (SC), Gouri Sankar Ghosh from Murshidabad, and Bidyut Roy from Balurghat. These constituencies are considered politically crucial because they can significantly influence the overall election outcome.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has already announced the schedule for the West Bengal Assembly polls, which will be held in two phases this year. The first phase of voting will take place on April 23, 2026, followed by the second phase on April 29, 2026. The counting of votes is scheduled for May 4, 2026, when the final results will determine which party forms the next government in the state.

With the release of its first candidate list, the BJP has clearly indicated that it plans to fight the election aggressively. Announcing candidates for 144 seats well in advance gives them more time to connect with voters and strengthen their campaign machinery. The possible direct contest between Suvendu Adhikari and Mamata Banerjee has already added a dramatic edge to the political narrative, turning the upcoming election into one of the most closely watched political battles in India.

As the campaign season begins to heat up, all eyes are now on the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and its response. The party’s candidate list and campaign strategy will play a crucial role in shaping the next phase of the election battle. For now, however, the BJP has made the first big move, setting the stage for a high-voltage political showdown in West Bengal in April 2026.
